Mobilizing aluminum in crustal and mantle fluids

چکیده

Aluminum is a major rock-forming element, but its low solubility in H2O at upper crustal conditions has led to the assumption that it is effectively immobile during fluid–rock interaction in the deep crust and upper mantle. However, new experimental results on Al solubility in H2O–SiO2–NaCl fluids at high pressure and temperature challenge this view. The combined effects of temperature, pressure, dissolved SiO2 and NaCl yield increases in corundum (Al2O3) solubility at 800°C, 1GPa of N10 3 or 10 relative to that at b0.3GPa in pure H2O. Enhancement of Al solubility is best explained by formation of polynuclear Na–Al–Si–O clusters and/or polymers. Aluminum should not be assumed to be immobile during fluid–rock interaction in deep environments. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Chemistry of Carbon in Aqueous Fluids at Crustal and Upper-Mantle Conditions: Experimental and Theoretical Constraints

Carbon can be a major constituent of crustal and mantle fluids, occurring both as dissolved ionic species (e.g., carbonate ions or organic acids) and molecular species (e.g., CO2, CO, CH4, and more complex organic compounds). The chemistry of dissolved carbon changes dramatically with pressure (P) and temperature (T). In aqueous fluids at low P and T, molecular carbon gas species such as CO2 an...

Geochemistry of continental subduction-zone fluids

The composition of continental subduction-zone fluids varies dramatically from dilute aqueous solutions at subsolidus conditions to hydrous silicate melts at supersolidus conditions, with variable concentrations of fluid-mobile incompatible trace elements. At ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic conditions, supercritical fluids may occur with variable compositions. The water component of these ...

Unusual mantle Poisson’s ratio, subduction, and crustal structure in central Alaska

[1] Subduction zones alter the upper plate in a variety of ways, including metasomatism via slab-derived fluids and accretion of exotic terranes. These processes should produce distinctive seismic signatures, as seismic velocities are sensitive to compositional variations. A new method is developed to estimates depths to interfaces and Poisson’s ratio (Vp/Vs ratio) for dipping layered structure...

Noble gases fingerprint a metasedimentary fluid source in the Macraes orogenic gold deposit, New Zealand

The world-class Macraes orogenic gold deposit (∼10Moz resource) formed during the late metamorphic uplift of a metasedimentary schist belt in southern New Zealand. Mineralising fluids, metals and metalloids were derived from within the metasedimentary host. Helium and argon extracted from fluid inclusions in sulphide mineral grains (three crush extractions from one sample) have crustal signatur...

The origin of high-Mg magmas in Mt Shasta and Medicine Lake volcanoes, Cascade Arc (California): higher and lower than mantle oxygen isotope signatures attributed to current and past subduction

We report the oxygen isotope composition of olivine and orthopyroxene phenocrysts in lavas from the main magma types at Mt Shasta and Medicine Lake Volcanoes: primitive high-alumina olivine tholeiite (HAOT), basaltic andesites (BA), primitive magnesian andesites (PMA), and dacites. The most primitive HAOT (MgO [ 9 wt%) from Mt. Shasta has olivine dO (dOOl) values of 5.9–6.1%, which are about 1%...
